Todd Mortl, Fox Brothers Todd
was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. where at the early age of five he
began his lifelong passion for percussion by taking up the drums after his
uncle bought him a set of Sears drums for Christmas. Seeing the diamond in
the rough talent their young son had Todd's parents enrolled him in private
lessons with a prestigious local teacher, Mike Kowaleski.
Over the next nine years, he honed his fundamentals by playing in the
grade school marching band and jazz ensemble programs of the high school he
would attend later. While
attending Wisconsin Lutheran High School Todd was the percussion section
leader for the concert and symphonic orchestras as well as the marching band
program. He also played for the Wisconsin State Music Competition award
winning WLHS Jazz Ensemble. Besides being the 1st chair drummer
all four years, he won numerous awards including the Louis Armstrong Jazz
Award, which is given for excellence in jazz performance, as a sophomore.
It was
also during this time that Todd attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music
in Milwaukee. While studying piano, total percussion, and jazz improv, he
also found himself in his first band playing gigs around town. Knowing that
drums and music would always be a major part of his life, Todd headed on the
road shortly after graduating high school. The lessons learned as a young
drummer helped him develop personally as well as hone his exciting stage
persona and flare that garnered the attention of many regional acts.
Over the course of the next 9 years, he would play in several very
popular local and regional bands touring the Midwest and opening for bands
like The BoDeans, The Violent Femmes, and Jerry Harrison of the Talking
Heads to name a few. In 1989
Todd found himself in Florida re-forming a band he co-founded in Milwaukee a
couple of years earlier. In addition to playing in several bands during the
next eleven years in "A" circuit clubs and major venues in the
Southeast, he also started teaching percussion classes for the local middle
school and high school bands, and opened his own drum school where he taught
private drum lessons from 1996-2000. Although he enjoyed much success in
Florida, Todd was looking to take his career to the next level. It was early
in the year of 2000 that a good friend, who had just returned to Florida
from recording in Nashville, approached him and "suggested" that
he give Music City a try. With abundant support from family and friends,
Todd made the move to Nashville in 2001.
Within
a couple of months he landed a house band gig in downtown Nashville. While
playing in the house band for over a year, in July of 2002 Todd was asked if
he would like the job as the tour drummer for the Christian Country Music
Association's award winning band the Fox Brothers. He gladly accepted the
opportunity, and is in his fourth year with the Brothers who are the 7-time
and reining Inspirational Country Music's Vocal Group of the Year as well as
the ICM’s 3-time Entertainers of the Year. In addition to those
illustrious awards, they have also won numerous other Christian Country and
Gospel music awards over their long career. As well as playing at fairs and
festivals while touring the US and Canada throughout the year, The Fox
Brothers are no strangers to the Grand Ole' Opry or the CMA Music Festival,
having played the prestigious "Mother Church of Country Music"
Ryman Auditorium and the Opry House as well as the River Stages during the
CMA Music Fest several times. Besides
being a Mapex Artist, Todd also endorses ProMark Drumsticks. He feels that
he has been "very, very blessed", and is looking forward to many
more years of success both in his future in music and in his life in Music
City. |
